Stellarium allows you to see what the night sky should look like. If you live in a location suffering from light pollution where only the brightest of constellations are visible, then a faint object like Neptune can be hard to find if not impossible. You can use Stellarium to find any celestial object. Stellarium can save the day…er, night…by providing the extra details not found on most star maps, so you can aim your telescope at exactly the right location. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more detailed information in order to pinpoint Neptune? It’s night time, and Neptune is out there somewhere, but where? You possess your trusty star map, your telescope is pointed in the correct area, but Neptune remains elusive. Here are a few notes about my Stellarium explorations. I have been using this program for a number of years, and it has served me well. Packed with star facts and a slick, custom GUI, Stellarium is one of the best companions available for understanding the wonders of the night sky. Stellarium is a high-quality, open source program that acts as your personal planetarium. Stellarium comes with a star catalogue of about 600 thousand stars and it is possible to download extra catalogues with up to 210 million stars.
It displays stars, constellations, planets and nebulae, and has many other features including multiple panoramic landscapes, fog, light pollution simulation and a built-in scripting engine. Stellarium renders 3D photo-realistic skies in real time with OpenGL.
